Here’s a another sparkling entry in our ongoing Power Pole Signs series.

These signs provide a dazzling dose of positivity for drivers and passerbys, and always brighten my day when I see them.

Not sure who put them all up, but glad for their shining brilliance and flash of genius!

On the corner of 4th Street and Bruce Avenue in Harewood, sits the appropriately-named 4th and Bruce Square.

Back in the day, this spot was home to a gas and service station – and in more recent times, a cleaners, a video store, a Vietnamese market and restaurant, and The Mandarin House Chinese restaurant.

Just across the street from Harewood’s first store (now Gateway To India) and the old Fun Centre arcade and pool hall, the Square started as the Calverley Service Station and Five Acre Garage, as shown in a June 16, 1928 newspaper clipping from The Nanaimo Daily Free Press.

The Calverleys were a well-known family in Harewood who owned the original Five Acre lot where The Square now stands (and the lot next door).

Over the years the gas station was torn down and a new building was built that still stands today.

Sam Robins played a major role in shaping early Harewood and Nanaimo. Arriving in the 1880s as Superintendent of the Vancouver Coal Company, he oversaw the mines that defined the region and laid out the five-acre Harewood farm lots that would eventually grow into the thriving neighbourhood we know today.

Robins was also known for his community leadership, from helping build local institutions to developing the gardens and green spaces like The Cricket Field, now known as Robins Park in his honour.

This historic photo shows a public celebration held for Robins around 1903, likely during “Samuel Robins Day” when the people of Harewood gathered to thank him for his decades of influence, before he returned to England. Surrounded by families, dignitaries, and a youth honour guard, the event captures how deeply respected he was, and how the roots of modern Harewood were shaped by his work and vision.
