Samuel Matthew Robins: Father of Harewood

Sam Robins played a major role in shaping early Harewood and Nanaimo. Arriving in the 1880s as Superintendent of the Vancouver Coal Company, he oversaw the mines that defined the region and laid out the five-acre Harewood farm lots that would eventually grow into the thriving neighbourhood we know today.

Robins was also known for his community leadership, from helping build local institutions to developing the gardens and green spaces like The Cricket Field, now known as Robins Park in his honour.

This historic photo shows a public celebration held for Robins around 1903, likely during “Samuel Robins Day” when the people of Harewood gathered to thank him for his decades of influence, before he returned to England. Surrounded by families, dignitaries, and a youth honour guard, the event captures how deeply respected he was, and how the roots of modern Harewood were shaped by his work and vision.
