Take a hike through the beautiful Harewood Plains in this tranquil video.
Just south of Nanaimo, the Harewood Plains are one of Vancouver Island’s most unique natural landscapes.
This rare ecosystem of rocky meadows, seasonal wetlands, and Garry oak habitat bursts with wildflowers each spring, and is home to rare species like the endangered Bog Bird’s-foot trefoil, or Lotus pinnatus – Nanaimo’s official flower. Scientists consider the plains one of the most important remaining ecosystems of its kind in Canada.

Recently, the area has become the focus of growing conservation efforts.
Environmental groups and community members are raising concerns about nearby development proposals that could disrupt the fragile hydrology that supports the plains’ rare plants and wildlife.
Organizations like the Nanaimo Area Land Trust are calling for stronger protections to help ensure this remarkable landscape is preserved for future generations.
