Here's another round of excellent birds-eye-view photos of the Harewood of yesteryear.

Like the photos in Volume 1, I found these high-quality pics buried in the Nanaimo Archives. They were all taken by Englefield Studio.

The picture above (NA#1992 026 A-P5865.8) is dated 1970, and shows an angle looking straight up Bruce Avenue.

Is this the Old Barn Inn?
Is this the Old Barn Inn?

The cross-street in the middle of the photo is Eighth Street, and you can see what is presumably the Old Barn Inn in the spot where the Harewood Arms Pub would eventually be (now Liquor Plus). Info about the Old Barn Inn is hard to find, and I've never seen a picture of it before.

From Wakesiah Avenue on the left, to the downtown waterfront on the right, this picture shows pretty much all of Harewood.

The photo below (NA#1992 026 A-P6002.12) is also dated 1970 by the Archives, and shows Harewood Plaza, the old Harewood School field, and Georgia Avenue School – which looks to be under construction.

In the top left corner, you can see 4th & Bruce Square, Harewood's first store and even a small part of The Fun Centre building.

The 1970-dated photo below (NA#1992 026 A-P5159.1) shows, on the left: Colliery Dam Park and the lands that became the Army base and the University. On the right: Howard Avenue, which passes Harewood School. Close to the top right of the photo, you can see St. Peter's Church at the end of Third Street.

The last photo (NA#1992 026 A-N660), show below, is a direct view of John Barsby School and surrounding areas. Long before the Harewood Centennial Park was built, you can see the Dickinson Dairy Farm and the old kid's pool next to the school, before the original tennis courts or lacrosse box was built!

This photo is dated 1972 in the archives, but I don't think that's correct, since the area where the Harewood Co-op and Old Barn Inn should be on the corner of Bruce & Eighth doesn't look developed yet (right-hand side of the photo). It's possible the other photo dates may not be correct either.
