The City of Nanaimo has purchased two properties next to Long Lake as part of new plans to expand Loudon Park.
"This project is 25 years in the making and I am extremely pleased," Nanaimo's Mayor Leonard Krog said.
"With the acquisition of these properties we have more options for the planned Loudon Park upgrades while getting one step closer to realizing the vision for a vibrant lakefront destination with space for residents of all abilities to enjoy for many years to come."
City councillors had recently been sparring over proposed plans for the park, first approving a controversial new $10.8 million activity centre, then rescinding their decision.
The original plan would have reduced green space at the park significantly by cutting down 29 trees to make way for the new structure.
After public backlash and a campaign to Save Loudon Park, councillors changed their minds and have now come up with this new plan.
The city paid almost $2.2 million for the properties.
Charlotte Davis, Deputy Director of Parks and Natural Areas, said city council is looking for a final vision which will suit all parties by providing the required activity centre without impacting the trees.
