A pair of new cell towers is set to rise in Harewood, following a decision by City Council that’s sparked mixed reactions among residents.
The two TELUS-owned streetlight-style monopoles, each standing 15.7 metres tall, are planned for installation along Shepherd Avenue near Fifth Street on city-owned property. The move comes after a City Council vote on July 28, where the majority approved a long-term license agreement – but not without some debate.
Coun. Ben Geselbracht stood as the lone voice of opposition, citing concerns raised by residents. "I haven’t really heard a lot of complaints around that particular area and need for these," he said. "So I’m having difficulties supporting."
A City staff report, however, paints a different picture – describing "poor service" in the area and recommending the towers as a way to improve cellular connectivity for local residents and businesses.
As part of the agreement, TELUS will pay the City $14,000 in annual rent, with increases tied to the Consumer Price Index Canada. The lease is locked in for 30 years, signalling a long-term presence for the infrastructure in Harewood.
While some residents remain uneasy about the potential health and aesthetic impacts, others are hopeful the improved coverage will be a benefit for safety, business, and connectivity in a growing neighbourhood.
