This week, Nanaimo's downtown core is getting the spotlight it deserves, through the eyes of a talented and thoughtful street photographer who's spent the past five years documenting its spirit, character, and quiet resilience.
Local artist Kim D. Armstrong is bringing her work to the public in a special one-day exhibit on Thursday, August 21, from 12–6 p.m. at Sound Heritage, with a series of striking black-and-white images showcasing the Victoria Crescent neighbourhood.
Known as a "friendly introvert," Armstrong is no stranger to the Crescent – and she's developed a deep affection for its energy, quirks, and under-appreciated charm.
While many of her photos have appeared on social media, this show will also feature never-before-seen work, including candid snapshots of people living their everyday lives: waiting for buses, enjoying cafés, walking the strip. She hopes visitors will recognize themselves – or someone they know – in her images.
The show is also personal. Photography has been part of Armstrong's life since childhood, and for her, it's more than just art – it's a form of meditation and self-expression.
Adding to the family spirit, Armstrong's son Kieran and his musical partner Clare will be performing live during the exhibit, providing a gentle acoustic soundtrack to an afternoon of art and connection.
